Disputatio juridica
Scottish decorative gilt tooling. Scottish (Edinburgh), mid 18th century. Dark green goatskin; decorated with gilt tooling in a classic Scottish 'herring-bone' pattern. One of four standard designs recognizable as purely Scottish in the 18th century, the herring-bone style first appeared on Scottish bindings in the 1670s, and was used in many variant forms by Scottish binders until the 1750s.
