Retina showing rods and cones
Section through the retina showing the rods and cones in the photoreceptor layer of an adult rhesus monkey. The cell nuclei are stained blue and are at the bottom of the picture and the discs of photoreceptive membranes are stained in grey. The two different types of photoreceptor cells can be clearly distinguished by their shape. The field of view is 75 micrometres across.
