Der Soroban hat im Gegensatz zum Suan-pan jeweils nur eine fünfwertige Kugel im oberen Teil: Auf jeder Reihe kann daher nur bis neun gezählt werden.
Überträge müssen beim Addieren sofort ausgeführt werden, was eine gewisse Übung erfordert.
