News from Suriname: Emancipation Day
Week number 63-29
Celebration of the Emancipation Day at the Oranjeplein in Paramaribo to commemorate the abolition of slavery 100 years ago. Governor Archibald Currie and Prime Minister Johan Adolf Pengel gave speeches in the rain. In the afternoon Pengel visited three women aged over 100 who had experienced the abolition and were therefore called 'crown witnesses' of emancipation.
