Saint Salvator abbey and vicinity in Ename around 1595
The occupation of the Oudenaarde area by the protestants of the city of Ghent in the period 1578-1582 is disastrous for the Saint Salvator abbey of Ename. The monks can flee in time for a raging army of 3000 protestants, but the abbey is pillaged completely and parts of the buildings close to the river are taken down to reinforce the walls of the city of Oudenaarde.
