Walther Salender, Walter Salender's grandfather, was a German soldier during WWI. Before joining the army, he was a merchant in Bremen. In the interwar period he came to Belgium with his wife. Although he fought as a soldier for Germany during WWI, he was nevertheless deported to Auschwitz together with his wife. His military passport states that he fought mainly on the Eastern Front.
