William Russell Murray, known as Russell, joined the Argyll and Southerland Highlanders, 8 Battalion in 1915 aged 22, enlisted for the "duration of War" and was promoted to the rank of Lance Corporal in July 1915, Corporal in August 1915 and Sergeant in February 1916.
