Religious order emblem (Hospitalis Sancti Iohannis Hierosolymitani Conventus Milites)
Historical Notice: A crusader institution par excellence, the Order of the Hospital of Saint John of Jerusalem adopted naturally as its emblem a white cross on a red field (in heraldic terminology “Gules a cross argent”). Even after the adoption of the eight-pointed cross (Maltese cross) in the 16th c., the simple Greek cross was still used in most heraldic depictions.
