Naisten lukutaito oli keskiajalla yllättävän korkea. Nunnat olivat kirjailijoita ja kirjanoppineita. Monet muut naiset rohkaisivat lukemaan ja oppimaan, varsinkin jalot naiset. Yksi esimerkki oli Christine de Pizan, runoilija Ranskan kuninkaan Kaarle VI:n hovissa.
